Early pregnancy pains and the facts associated with it


Pain during pregnancy is a common condition as the body undergoes a lot of changes.  The body accommodates with the baby growing inside the body in spite of being a natural process it causes discomfort to the mother.  The hormonal changes and the expansion of the uterus are mainly responsible for the pain during pregnancy.

Causes of pregnancy pain

Most common and sharp pain during pregnancy is observed in the region surrounding the uterus, Lower Abdomen and the groin area. Although the pain is uncomfortable and sometimes causes extreme suffering for the expecting mother still they are natural and common during pregnancy some of the causes of pregnancy pain are,

  • Stretching of the uterus: Before 12 weeks of pregnancy, it is not possible for a pregnant woman to understand the stretching of the uterus. If someone is pregnant with twins and triplets then only stretching of the uterus at early pregnancy can be noticed by the mother.  As the pregnancy advances the uterus grows and put pressure on the surrounding organs. As a result, a pregnant woman me experience discomfort and pain in the surrounding region of the uterus. If the pregnancy pains are mild then little rest is adequate to overcome the pain but if their persistent and refuses to go then the pregnant women should visit a gynecologist.
  • Formation of gas: During pregnancy, various Hormonal changes are observed which has some adverse effect on the digestive system of a pregnant woman. Expansion of the uterus, on the other hand, put pressure on the rectum causing gas and sometimes constipation also. The symptoms of these problems are pain in the lower abdominal area which is extremely uncomfortable and needs medication to be cured.
  • Ectopic pregnancy:  Early pregnancy pains can also occur due to ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg attached itself to the fallopian tube instead of the uterus. The pregnant women with ectopic pregnancy experience excruciating pain in the abdomen during early pregnancy.  The expecting mother experiences other complications like vaginal bleeding weakness and other discomforts. It is a medical emergency and a threat to the Mother’s life if not treated appropriately.
  • Miscarriages: If a pregnant woman loses the baby before 20 weeks of pregnancy then it is termed as a miscarriage.  Excessive vaginal bleeding associated with severe pain in the abdominal area as well as in the back is observed during the miscarriage.  It is a medical emergency and the mother must be admitted to the hospital so that she can recover properly. The pain is so severe in miscarriages that it can even cause a heart attack.

Precautions to be taken during early pregnancy pain

As most of the early pregnancy pain is associated with regular pregnancy problems therefore proper rest and over the counter medications are enough to give some relief to the pregnant ladies.  The severe pregnancy pain experienced during ectopic pregnancy and miscarriages are life-threatening and require medical attention. The pregnant lady must be under medical supervision until she is out of danger.
